In spite of the Tintin books always being kept in stock at Barnes and Noble, Border's, etc., and a friend of mine who works at a grade school telling me that a number of the kids devour the books, I was pretty sure that the "brand" wouldn't have much recognizability with the American public at large.

I was originally dubious when I heard that Adventures was going to rely on "mo-cap," with its inherent quotient of creepiness. But Adventures is nowhere near as weird-looking as, say, The Polar Express.

That's good to hear. In the trailers, I found the appearance of the characters offputting, but still having not seen the movie, I've remained open about the motion-capture, as I know it's a possibility that it would seem "natural" once one found themself absorbed in the story's momentum.

Still, I maintain that, if they really wanted the characters to have the same features that they do in Hergé's stylized drawings, then trying to simultaneously have them appear as "realistic" at best is foolish! Either see the movie through as one that's completely, "genuinely" animated (whether traditionally or Pixar-esque), or as straightforward live-action (well, with special effects and fantastic landscapes being courtesy of CGI, as is par the course in this day and age), and leave the portrayal of the characters up to the actors that have been cast! Don't go half-way, waffling between the two methods; choose one, and commit, Hollywood producers! :D

And yet, given the Barks homage in Raiders of the Lost Ark and that I feel Barks to be only a couple shades removed from Hergé, it gives me a certain comfort that Spielberg helmed this movie, because it seems a given that he respects and understands the property.

As I mentioned, I still haven't seen the movie -- first, I want to read all of the Tintin comics (to date, I've read the first seven), or at least the ones that this movie was based on. From the trailers, as a light-hearted and whimsical, yet high-stakes and big-stage, fantasy-adventure movie, it looks like it inevitably will deliver. Still, I don't know if I'll ever be able accept these motion-capture mutant versions of Hergé's characters! But your review is very affirming and reassuring.

RyanRyan Wynnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00477919968924048814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4357793224370188597.post-61009989930344650012011-12-29T21:05:41.939-05:002011-12-29T21:05:41.939-05:00Well, there's your problem. I am dumbfounded at the antics of a fellow on the iMDB message board who seems to have declared a critical "jihad" against this movie. Ostensibly, he is objecting to the fact that it is not a literal transcription of the original comic album. Those changes, I didn't really mind, though the inclusion of Castafiore was probably unneccessary. Like, say, the X-MEN movies, this film had to introduce the characters to us AND tell an interesting story. And so it did.

ChrisChris Barathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845538037091279990noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4357793224370188597.post-6613396942688747142011-12-28T23:18:38.959-05:002011-12-28T23:18:38.959-05:00Glad you enjoyed it, as this movie seems to be pre...Glad you enjoyed it, as this movie seems to be pretty polarizing.
